HSK 3.0 Explained: New Levels, Vocabulary and 2026 Test Dates
HSK 3.0 is the largest change to the Chinese proficiency system in years. It expands HSK from six levels to nine, updates the vocabulary learners are expected to know, and places greater emphasis on using Chinese across a wider range of skills.
However, the rollout has caused plenty of confusion. The new proficiency standard has existed since 2021, HSK 7-9 is already available, and HSK 1-6 had a global trial in January 2026—but that does not mean every regular HSK exam has already switched to HSK 3.0.

What is HSK 3.0?
HSK, or the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, is the standardized test of Chinese proficiency for learners whose first language is not Chinese. The name “HSK 3.0” is commonly used for the new system built around the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education.
The standard was published by China's Ministry of Education in 2021. It describes Chinese ability using three broad stages and nine levels, with benchmarks covering vocabulary, characters, grammar and communication skills.

When does HSK 3.0 start?
The short answer: HSK 3.0 has started rolling out, but a complete changeover date for regular HSK 1-6 exams has not yet been announced.
HSK 7-9 held its first global examination in 2022. For HSK 1-6, selected test centers around the world ran an official HSK 3.0 trial on January 31, 2026. The trial included both paper-based and internet-based exams, and candidates received official score reports.
The official HSK announcement also states that regular 2026 exam dates continue to use HSK 2.0, with the formal HSK 3.0 launch date to be announced separately. If you are registering for an exam, check the version directly with your test center rather than assuming that every 2026 exam uses the new format.

The extra levels do not simply add three more beginner-to-intermediate exams. HSK 7-9 forms one advanced examination, with the result determining whether a candidate receives level 7, 8 or 9. It tests listening, reading, writing, translation and speaking.
During the January 2026 HSK 3.0 trial, candidates taking HSK 3-6 were also required to register for the corresponding speaking exam. This is another reason to check the precise requirements of your chosen test date and center.
How many words are in each HSK 3.0 level?
The vocabulary is cumulative: the total for each level includes the words from the levels below it. Novli separates the list by level so you can see exactly what to study next.

Should you study HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0?
If you are already registered for a regular HSK exam in 2026, prepare for the version confirmed by your test center. The official notice says that regular 2026 dates continue to use HSK 2.0, so changing your entire study plan without checking could mean preparing for the wrong vocabulary and format.
If you are learning Chinese without an immediate exam date, starting the HSK 3.0 vocabulary is a sensible long-term choice. The new lists give you a structured route from beginner vocabulary through the advanced HSK 7-9 words, and the language you learn remains useful even while the exam transition is underway.
