HSK 3.0 Launches December 13, 2026: Dates, Changes & Preparation
HSK 3.0 will launch worldwide on December 13, 2026. Chinese Testing International has confirmed the date in its official launch announcement. If you are preparing for an upcoming exam, check your test centre's format and registration deadline, then plan your study around the matching syllabus.

When does HSK 3.0 start?
The worldwide launch is scheduled for December 13, 2026. The official notice gives the following registration deadlines for that sitting, in Beijing time:

Confirm the deadline with your chosen centre before booking: local registration windows can differ. The announcement directs candidates to Chinese Test Service to find centres and register.
Can I take the current HSK before the launch?
November 7 is the last HSK 1–6 session listed on the central 2026 calendar before December 13. Its listed deadlines are October 11 for paper-based tests and October 28 for computer-based tests. Confirm the exam version and local deadline with your centre; this calendar does not establish a universal final date for the old format at every location. See the central calendar.
For example, Japan's organiser lists October 7 as its registration deadline for the November 7 session.
What is HSK 3.0?
HSK, or Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi, is a Chinese proficiency test for learners whose first language is not Chinese. The new system covers three stages and nine levels:

The 2021 proficiency standard, the exam syllabus published in November 2025 and the December 2026 launch announcement describe different parts of the transition. How is HSK 3.0 different from HSK 2.0?

Some familiar words move earlier: 手机 (shǒujī, mobile phone) moves from old HSK 2 to new HSK 1. Other headwords, such as 高铁 (gāotiě, high-speed rail), appear in the new list but not in the official 2015 list. See our HSK 3.0 vs HSK 2.0 vocabulary comparison for examples and the source lists.
Speaking also deserves attention. The September 2026 trial notice required HSK 3–6 candidates to register for the corresponding speaking test. Check the requirements for your own booking. At the advanced end, the combined HSK 7–9 exam covers listening, reading, writing, translation and speaking; its result determines the level awarded.
How many words are in each HSK 3.0 level?
The totals are cumulative. For example, HSK 2 introduces 200 entries beyond HSK 1's 300, bringing the total to 500. These counts follow the numbered entries in the current exam syllabus, including separately listed senses.

Should you study HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0?
If you already have an exam booked, prepare for the version your centre confirms. Keep using relevant materials, then check them against that exam's vocabulary, grammar and sample tasks.
If you are preparing for HSK 3.0, use the new syllabus to identify gaps. An old textbook can still help you practise Chinese, but its vocabulary sequence will not necessarily match the new level with the same number.
If you are learning without an exam deadline, the new vocabulary lists provide a structured starting point. Choose a manageable level and combine word review with listening, reading and using Chinese yourself.
